88% of dying patients reported dreaming of loved ones who had already died.
Dr Christopher Kerr has spent almost 30 years caring for people in their final days of life.
During that time, he and his team have interviewed over 1,500 dying patients to understand something that medicine has historically paid very little attention to. What people actually experience as they approach death.
Christopher is a hospice doctor and researcher whose work explores the dreams and visions people have towards the end of their lives and why so many describe these experiences as comforting rather than frightening.
What makes his work particularly interesting is that he's actually recorded patients talking about these experiences, rather than relying entirely on what other people remember them saying.
And some of what he's discovered challenges the assumptions we have about dying.
We discussed things like:
- Why 88% of patients in his research reported dreams of deceased loved ones.
- What actually matters most to people in their final days.
- Why children experience dying differently from adults.
- What he's learned from interviewing 750 grieving families.
- Whether there is any evidence of life after death.
Christopher also brought footage of patients describing what they were seeing and experiencing in the weeks before their deaths, which gave us an opportunity to hear directly from the people behind his research.
There's still a lot we don't understand about death, and Christopher is very open about that. But what I found particularly valuable was hearing from someone who has spent decades listening to people at a point in their lives most of us know very little about.
This conversation covers some difficult subjects, particularly for anyone who has lost someone close to them, but I think there's a lot here worth understanding while we're still here.

My dad had cancer and was given six months to live. One day he just went into a coma and he never came out. His wish was to die at home so we called the fire department and asked them to pick him up and lay him in the hospital bed we got to put in the living room. When the hospice nurse came she explained everything to us. But the one thing I wasn’t ready for was my dad never opened his eyes and he never spoke but one day his left arm reached up and a smile came on his face and his lips began to move as if he were speaking to someone in the room above him again his eyes were closed but he could see someone I guess it was the angels coming to take him perhaps he was seeing his mom but it was clear he was reaching for them and he was trying to speak to them and he had a smile on his face🙏🙏🙏

The fact that people aren't thinking about their achievements at the end, but about being someone's son, brother, or friend... that really puts life into perspective.

My newly departed brother whom I was extremely close to (we were like peas & carrots and could talk for hours every day) had died suddenly; he was only 56. He came back to visit me several times. It was astounding what he shared with me both awake and in a few dreams. The last time he visited it was a lucid dream where I was sitting on a couch by the window when his “plasma form/soul?” came in from the window and stopped right in front of me in a swirling glittering range of colors that I did not recognize. It was very sparkly but I had never seen those colors before. It shook me and made me scared even though I knew it was him who was visiting me. My heart pounded in my mouth because it terrified me seeing colors I tried to recognize but could not. We are not meant to see beyond this realm as living humans; it’s verboten. I let it be known how terrified I was and told him sorry I can’t handle this. He instantly stopped the dream. Then suddenly every pleasure center in my brain was hit at the same time. Immense happiness, joy, exhilaration, just overwhelming. I sat bolt upright in the dark in my room out of breath panting. Then I heard his voice in my mind as he said, “Yeah, it’s just that good here!” I am not nuts, I do not drink nor do drugs. I am well-educated. Bottom line is I saw colors I’ve never seen before and felt a super strong feeling I’ve never felt before. It truly is indescribable as I can’t compare it to anything. And this was only 1 of 5 experiences he shared with me after his passing. Two souls that love each other will never be parted.

I am an MD and work with end-of-life patients. I was an atheist. I did not want to believe in God or an afterlife. I spent so much of my life not believing. I did some bad things to make money and "achieving." I had a well-known high achiever and billionaire in one of the beds I was managing. He told me, "It's not worth it. None of this is coming with us to the next place." And he felt "blessed" because he knew he had a death sentence (cancer), but most people die without knowing. Three days later, my mom suddenly passed away. He was right. Of course, now I can't unsee it all and how it's all connected. The more I delve in, the more I want to just sit in a Catholic Church (it's the one that makes the most sense to me) - adoration. I go every day. It's about the suffering we go through here on earth, and why Jesus died for us. If you had asked me 8 years ago if I believed in any of this, I would have mocked it. We need to get over ourselves, our pride, our ego. Our life here on earth is short compared to eternity.

I crossed over one night in my sleep (I have sleep apnea & my 2nd husband tried to suffocate me in my sleep for the life insurance.) I crossed over into THE MOST INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL place & all I could feel in that realm was THE MOST PURE LOVE that far surpasses anything that we know as love in human form. I didn’t WANT to come back. The overwhelming love, purity & peace was amazing. But I was told I had to go back because my son was going to need me. He suddenly appeared & told me “come on mom. We have to go now” & I tried to convince him that I was going to stay, that he’d be fine. I was told “No. You have to go back. You can’t be here.” It wasn’t Heaven, but somewhere in between. So I walked into the waterfall & came back to this realm choking & gasping for air. I didn’t wanna be here, even though I love my life here & my son is my world!
So… since then, I no longer fear death & don’t get sad when people die. I’m happy for them & happy that I was able to know & love them in this realm.

I worked in Hospice for 12 years… I walked into that job not believing in an afterlife, god, heaven, hell, or higher beings. That job changed my perception on life and what awaits us after our time here. I seen and felt things that were unexplainable….It made me a believer.

I totally agree that there is not enough openness about death. No one should have to pass over without guidance of some kind

My friend died of cancer at age 68. I visited her up until a week before she passed. She told me that she was seeing her deceased mom, and others, in her room. It wasn't a constant. They'd come and go. I think they came to check on her.

Three mints before his death, my atheist father told me and one of my sisters, “There comes a time when you realise there is a God and you’re in trouble.” A few days before his death, he was deeply troubled about his own sins and sought to make it right with true repentance. He was one who never apologised for anything my whole life to that point. He was a changed man. He became a real Christian.

It's SO important we talk about death. It's not easy, but it's so important.
I look forward to getting his book

I was close to death and experienced "delirium like experiences that brought me back to life". My NDE was on July 02nd 2025. Cancer with inflammation around lungs, heart, loss of muscle, inflammation on chest lymph nodes, platelets dropped to 16, my life force nearly left me that night under a 105.7 degrees of fever. The visions and the conversations I had, my request to live, and a new purpose, my surrender, too much to describe. Maybe I will write a book someday. I am living fully now a whole new life.

I been to the edge in a hospital bed, going from a super fit 23 year old at 82kg and got down to 45kg in 6 months from a severe medical issue.
You really do just let go into peace and want to sleep.
A miracle brought me back and I’m fitter than 80% of 40 year olds now.
Bless the great creator ❤

I took care of my mother, at the end of her life. Here in my home, what was her home too. She often told me about a man she see at night, standing at the end of her bed. And after mum passed on, I had a personal & private experience, that proves me, there IS, life after death.
Forget what humans teach you, they know nothing, in reality. Ancient humans knew far more, that our modern societey ever will.
I have also had more than 1 near death experience myself too...

My Grandmother was dying, in a coma, when in front of my Aunty, she suddenly opened her eyes, she reached out both arms and told my Aunty that my Grandfather was calling to her to come to him. He literally came to get her and bring home with him
She passed away a day or so later, very, but she never spoke again.
