A stronghold is an untruth that has lodged itself in our brains and keeps out the knowledge of God. Shame can be a stronghold if we are believing something that is literally not the truth – about God, ourselves, or others. So really, shame and the gospel can’t co-exist peacefully. You could even say that shame is anti-gospel.
Jackie and Preston discuss how the gospel – the good news that we are forgiven – exposes lies and replaces them with the truth we find in God’s word. We’ve got to meditate on the gospel, read the Bible more than we think about ourselves, and be aware of the way we are helping to remove (or unconsciously adding to) shame in other people’s lives.

Shame is connected to pride because pride is rooted in our own abilities and performance. So therefore we are taught that if we perform, we should be proud. Which intern insinuates that IF AND WHEN we do NOT perform we are taught that we should feel shame. Humility however, teaches us that we can do NO good thing without God. So therefore we are freed from pride and shame because we expect no good thing from ourselves and every good thing from the Lord. Essentially we are taught that we have to earn our own worthiness instead of understanding that Christ already did that for us.

I was a problematic teen and I remember causing issues in my HS class and my teacher at the time telling me " well, im sure you will work at McDonalds" in front of the entire class. I'm sure he was frustrated with me but that comment stuck with me and still to this day I struggle with feeling like I have something to prove. Shame doesnt always look like what we think. May God grant us all deliverance of shame 🙏🏽

This is potentially one the most edifying podcast I've heard this year.
SHAME needs a part 2... Because the examples they give of what shame looks like from a biblical point of view is top tier 💯💯

I didn't realize how I literally operate in shame. My biggest fear is that I'll be seen and not loved. I didn't know I had so much shame. Thank you for posting this

Shame is like telling God he messed up with creating you, calling you His, and saying you are good. Shame gives you a false identity.

I am so impressed at how Jackie can put her thoughts and feelings into words. I struggle with that.

It strikes me how much ingenuity they used - sewing leaves together, crafting something functional out of panic - and yet how little wisdom was in the act itself. Fig leaves are prickly. They irritate the skin. They're temporary. And still, they tried. Just like I do. When I feel exposed, ashamed, or afraid, and, at times, I reach for my own version of a fig leaves - quick fixes, distractions, or self-made solutions that don't actually heal anything. They only itch.
After Adam and Eve made their coverings, they waited for God to come. The text tells us that God walked in the garden 'in the cool of the day,' which could mean a late afternoon breeze, meaning there was a stretch of time - maybe hours - where they 'sat' with their fear, their guilt, and the unknown consequences of what they had done. I know the feeling. The waiting after I've messed up. The dread of what comes next. The fear of being confronted by the truth.
When God arrives, He asks, "Where are you?" God knew exactly where Adam was hiding. But Adam didn't know where he was - spiritually, emotionally, relationally. Before God addresses the fig leaves, the fear, or the shame. He addressed the distance. How often do I want God to fix the discomfort - the fear, the consequences, the awkwardness - but He goes straight to the deep-seated root. He wants to restore the relationship.
As I sit with this story, I sense God asking me the same question He asked Adam: What parts of my life am I covering instead of confessing? What consequences or conversations do I avoid? What root issue might God be gently pointing toward? (IA native)

Their bodies were naked but appeared “DIFFERENT” & it reminds me of how shame can come into play just for being different.

At 34, I’m realizing how much we have to do to fight those lies.
Since a little girl, I’ve been bullied about the shape of my head. I just cut my 8years long dreads and quickly start microlocks but my scalp is asking for break. My dermatologist suggests to cut everything and start over but I can’t see myself without hair. The crazy thing is I don’t care about hair, it’s just I still can hear those comments about the shape of my head🙌🏾🙌🏾May God gives me strength to remember he made me beautifully cute

The worldly things are the bad food and it does bring so much shame usually. Good

What yall said about him stopping something that could shape her adult life is so real. My brother in law to this day doesn’t believe in God bc he was bullied all throughout school, he prayed to God to stop it and no one stepped up to help him. His mother said to just not listen to them😢. He is 33 and is still trapped in those days. If someone had summoned the courage to stand up for him then it would’ve been a different story and he could’ve been serving the Lord now. BUT I am praying that I have the courage to stand up for the kids that need it!! We pray for miracles not realizing we have to step out of our comfort zone sometimes and BECOME the miracle for someone else!!

I felt so much shame from a very early age being bullied for just simply being myself. As I got older, I tried to cover up who I was by blending in, but still didn't fit in at all so that brought even more shame. I lost myself deeply and its only through Jesus that I am now being restored and renewed. Shame is a killer.

Jackie, I heard you. There’s so much power in testimony, thank you for sharing yours. I resonate w it a lot. You put into words how I’ve been feeling. I make myself small & I quiet myself bc I’ve build this tough shell bc of what you said but inside I’m just a woman with a soft and very sensitive heart.
And Brene Brown is such a good researcher! She always says, dare to be seen. Deeply seen.
She reminds us to stop numbing ourselves bc when we numb we can’t selectively numb emotions. Bc when we numb we also numb joy and happiness. And so when something good happens in life and we don’t feel happy and we wonder what’s wrong and we numb again and it’s a whole cycle.
