A recent Associated Press article talked about Lyft drivers who see their work as “mobile Christian ministries.” It's not just bad behavior. It's potentially dangerous.

Uber and Lyft need to fix this problem now.

Imagine the Fox News outrage if atheist Lyft and Uber drivers were trying to deconvert their passengers.

Well said. Just inform the uber driver if they don't stop preaching, they will not get a tip, and they will get a complaint against them. This one made me angry. Fundamentalist Christians are taking too many liberties these days.

Literally a "captive" audience: Hold your audience prisoner and preach to them. What's wrong with that as long as you're respectful? We might as well ask, "what's wrong with slavery as long as the owners are respectful?"

Being stuck in a moving vehicle with a driver trying evangelize their customers. What a nightmare

Something like this happened to a friend of mine a few months ago. She had taken an Uber somewhere and was talking with her driver about what she's researching in our PhD program, which in this case was intimate partner violence within queer relationships, and once she mentioned that, the driver handed her a card sharing her fundamentalist Christian proselytizing religious message. After the ride ended, my friend called me to tell me about it and I really wonder how it might have gone differently if my friend had mentioned that she herself is queer or that she's Muslim. With the wrong sort of driver, that could get very dangerous very quickly.

On my last Lyft ride, the driver called me an abomination and called my "lifestyle" "demonic!" and the other passenger paying for the ride, joined in and "tag-teamed" me! I laughed it all off and rebutted as much as I could but felt helpless as a passenger in someone else's car!

Another thing to be cautious of is if the passenger has previous religious trauma. If this kind of conversation comes in, that could have a very negative affect on their well-being.

It's this simple, if any uber driver starts to preach at me with Christianity, Islam, or any other religion, they can and will kiss their tip a very long goodbye.

Even more glad I ride with earbuds now.

Before Uber and Lyft got big, I once had a cab driver spend the entire ride ranting about chemtrails.

In case anyone thinks this is new, my Dad drove a taxi for over 25 years, (before Uber and Lyft even existed) and he 'witnessed' to the vast majority of his passengers. He even printed tracks and knew enough Spanish that not knowing English was no escape.

I've never had a lyft or uber driver preach to me but a lot of them do listen to Christian music in my area. It doesn't surprise me this is a thing and I do hope they put a better policy in place but yeah, this is not a new phenomenon.

This also happens in the air as well where group of Christians brought out their guitars and started singing their worship songs and one guy in the picture was not so happy about it. It sucks when people shove their beliefs in other people’s throats.

I have found total silence is a great deterrent. Suddenly, I have something really important to look at on my phone (you know like playing a game) and do not even respond. they are not worth the energy to even say I am not interested. Totally ignoring them. Let them talk to themselves. Then a bad rating, of course. I had important business to conduct on my phone and I needed to concentrate, and they would not stop talking.

As a 6 year, full time Lyft driver, I find this behavior offensive and unacceptable.

I've always wondered why so many of my rideshare drivers are weirdly religious. Like listening to Christian talk radio or hymns. I once had someone change it as I was getting in the car. I usually just sit there in silence and don't say anything. I'm not one to ruffle the feathers of someone who has me trapped in their car. I've also gotten weird anti-vaxxer people who wanted to tell me about their conspiracy theories, but I shut that one down fast.

It should be considered "mental assault" if they do that. Lol

Very inappropriate, they need to just shut up and drive. Imagine if we saw Muslim Uber and Lyft drivers preaching Islam to their passengers, Fox News would have a collective aneurysm.

I don’t live in the US, but my mom and I was once told our religion (Buddhism) is “primitive” and we should accept Jesus as the lord and savior by a ride-sharing driver. On our way to the temple, during one of the largest celebration in our religion
