What did Christians actually believe before Constantine transformed Christianity forever? Long before imperial churches, official creeds, and Christianity became the religion of an empire, Christians were divided, persecuted, and arguing over what Jesus meant.

In this historical documentary, we travel back to the earliest centuries of Christianity to uncover what Christians believed before Constantine and before the Roman Empire embraced the faith.

Our journey begins in 112 AD, when the Roman governor Pliny the Younger investigated Christians in Bithynia and described their strange devotion to Christ. From there, we travel back to Jerusalem around 30 AD and examine the earliest Christian beliefs surrounding the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth.

We explore Paul and the earliest Christian creed, the expectation of the apocalypse, and the dramatic diversity of early Christianity.
By the second century, Christians were far from united. Valentinus, Marcion, Jewish-Christian communities, the Gospel of Thomas, the Gospel of Mary, and other early Christian traditions reveal a world of competing beliefs and interpretations.
Then comes persecution.
We examine the Decian persecution, the Great Persecution under Diocletian, and the transformation brought by Constantine after the Battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312 AD.

Finally, we enter the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, where bishops debated the nature of Jesus and the future of Christian doctrine.
But one of the biggest myths is also examined: Nicaea did not choose the books of the Bible, and Constantine did not invent the divinity of Jesus.
So what was Christianity like before Constantine?
This documentary explores early Christianity, Christian origins, Roman persecution, Constantine, the Council of Nicaea, early Christian beliefs, lost gospels, and the forgotten diversity of the ancient Church.

The end comes when the Lord comes upon you/calls you home. Like a thief in the night.
