Elisha was one of the most powerful prophets and spiritual leaders in the Old Testament. He was chosen by God to succeed the prophet Elijah and continue the work of leading Israel toward righteousness, faith, and obedience.
Elisha's leadership was not based on wealth, political influence, military strength, or personal ambition. His authority came from the power of God working through his life.
His story teaches us that true leadership begins with faithfulness, humility, obedience, and a willingness to serve God.
1. Elisha Was Called to Serve God
Scripture: 1 Kings 19:19 (KJV)
"So he departed thence, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth: and Elijah passed by him, and cast his mantle upon him."
Leadership Lesson: Great leaders must be willing to answer God's calling, even when it requires sacrifice and leaving behind a comfortable life.
2. Elisha Desired a Double Portion of God's Spirit
Scripture: 2 Kings 2:9 (KJV)
"And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me."
Leadership Lesson: Godly leadership requires spiritual strength, wisdom, and dependence upon God rather than personal ability alone.
3. Elisha Demonstrated Faith Through Miracles
Scripture: 2 Kings 2:14 (KJV)
"And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the LORD God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over."
Leadership Lesson: A leader empowered by God must walk by faith and trust God's ability to accomplish what seems impossible.
4. Elisha Was a Leader Who Helped Those in Need
Scripture: 2 Kings 4:7 (KJV)
"Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, and live thou and thy children of the rest."
Leadership Lesson: True leadership is not simply about exercising authority. It is about serving others, showing compassion, and helping people through difficult situations.
5. Elisha Demonstrated Courage Against Powerful Enemies
Scripture: 2 Kings 6:16 (KJV)
"And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them."
Leadership Lesson: Godly leaders must remain courageous during opposition, remembering that God's power is greater than the challenges before them.
6. Elisha Led Through Prayer and Spiritual Vision
Scripture: 2 Kings 6:17 (KJV)
"And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha."
Leadership Lesson: Effective Christian leaders should seek God's guidance through prayer and encourage others to trust in His promises.
7. Elisha Remained Faithful Until the End
Scripture: 2 Kings 13:14 (KJV)
"Now Elisha was fallen sick of his sickness whereof he died. And Joash the king of Israel came down unto him, and wept over his face, and said, O my father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof."
Leadership Lesson: A faithful leader continues serving God through every season of life, leaving behind a legacy of wisdom, courage, and obedience.
