Maylene has endured many storms in her life, but it was in the wake of the 2013 Moore, Oklahoma, tornado that she found the strength to truly rebuild her faith.

The day of the tornado, Maylene was ready to give up on a life that had completely overwhelmed her. Her second husband had left her to raise their children alone and she was working three jobs to keep the family afloat. She felt helpless. But after surviving the tornado that day, Maylene knew that she and her family could make it through anything with God’s help.

“My whole life, I’d felt abandoned. Like there were pieces missing. After the storm, God answered my prayers. He picked up the pieces and filled that void. I don’t ever have to feel like I’m going to be alone or abandoned again because He’s going to be there for me every step of the way.”

And I thought I had it hard.  It's amazing how when things seem to be at its lowest, that something "worse" can save it.

It sometimes takes a storm to waken us up to the fact that God is our refuge and our strength in times of troubles.
Our Lord is the Substance of our faith in our lives experiences. We need only to look and become aware of this truth amidst the turmoils of our individual perspectives of our experiences.

I remember going to help the people of Moore after the tornado. The destruction was heartbreaking, especially the school. Despite the devastation, people were so willing to help one another, pushing aside any differences and just loving one another. While the death and destruction was horrific, something beautiful emerged from the wreckage that is hard to describe. Like a phoenix from the ashes.
