Reminds me of the Robin Williams quote from Dead Poets Society: "Medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for."

So, when I heard about the Timothee comment, I thought “Oh, he’s let the fame go to his head. He just made an ignorant comment.” I rolled my eyes and moved on but then I saw another small actor with a big following talk about it in her video in it clicked for me. She talked about how most actors take ballet classes because it teaches them movement and discipline and it made me think back to when I was in college for screenwriting and all the actors I worked with were taking ballet classes. People are upset with his comment, especially other actors/artists, because they know how closely aligned those two fields are and how he got big because he was seen as a “young actor who takes his craft seriously” he was the “sensitive boy who is a great actor because he appreciates and understands acting” only for him to make a throw away comment that dismisses something that is pretty fundamental to the craft he’s trying to hone. That’s why people were so mad at him.

The first 25 minutes is the most beautiful description of art & culture. "You can't penny pinch passion." That's art.

Opera and ballet have outlasted literal empires and multiple world wars. They do not cower in the face of the usual news cycle. They and their grudges will endure past all understanding.

Misty Copeland just had her hip replaced in December and went on stage and danced beautifully.

Note how the Sinners performance featured both a Chinese opera performer and a Black ballerina.

3:51 my favorite thing that some Opera and Ballet shows used Timothee as discount code. Which was pretty clever ngl.

As a jazz musician i "get" what old tim meant in terms of the average person/consumer of media. Its no secret that art forms like jazz/ballet/opera/classical/traditional folk music and dance are not a huge as blockbuster movies, video games netflix, tiktok or youtuber influencers. But that doesnt mean those art forms are "dead". Through the internet jazz musicians have bigger audiences than ever before, emmet cohen has video concerts seen by millions. There are plenty of avenues for ballet and opera to thrive but its not what is force fed through the algorithms on the internet, you have to know about it and seek it to enjoy. Its less that nobody cares and more that the algorithm has decided its doesnt produce enough money to be pushed.

Poe died penniless. His works are now considered an essential part of the American literary landscape and an inspiration for countless artists that followed.

I'm in my late 50s. I worked in software development my whole life. I still have vivid memories of the art, music, ballet, books, poetry, that moved me in my late teens and early 20s. Could recite some of the poems for you today! I have no memory of any of the software that was selling for massive bucks 25, 30, 35 years ago. This to me is the difference between what is good art and what pays well today in the short term. The art shaped my life and me as a person, Windows didn't.

The way Josh's voice broke when talking about how much a song can mean to a person, like he was thinking about a particular song. I love how genuine he is.

My therapist told me to take a day off of listening to politics. This is the exception. Keep doing God's work, my man. You're the best thing I can listen to to keep up with the world.
