Culture eats strategy for lunch. Anyone who’s been a worship leader knows there needs to be systems to build and maintain a music team that is focused on worship and not personal performance. It only takes one wrong person on the worship team to sow discord, which causes the good team members to be discouraged and quit the team. With lots of prayer, a worship leader can use these tools and systems to help protect the team so they can grow in the art of worship while remaining in the heart of worship.

“I don’t chase people down to get them on my team” is so good. We lean on the Holy Spirit to do our recruiting. Their involvement in the body of Christ is always an act of obedience whether it’s in kids ministry or worship ministry. It’s the Holy Spirits prodding our souls for more of Jesus.

This is a fascinating exhortation. I am a member of a team currently and have been involved in worship for many years. It is a tremendous blessing. I can't imagine allowing someone on a team who isn't a believer.

Clear and practical! i appreciate how your process enables a relationship to unfold amidst the activity. You may get more mileage from using continuums on the skill checklist rather than yes/no responses. A "yes" may mean "well, I remember that phrase from high school choir, and I can probably catch on pretty fast," or it may mean "I've taught music students to sightread for years." You don't really know what they mean. But a 2 out of 5 rating warrants a "Tell me about your answer" discussion.

In our praise team there is 1 guitarist, 1 bass guitarist, 1 drummer, our band director plays piano and sings, there are 7 singers only 4 know how to do harmony and the 3 of us all sing melody .Our band director is amazing and has a lot of musical training in both instrumental and vocals. It works great we have a small church and the majority of us including myself have been learning as we go. The members of our praise band have been members of the church for 10+ years, serve on other teams and with other commitments, and attend a bible study together a long with a few other members of our church. Our church has multiple Bible studies and groups. When I first started I felt really intimidated and over whelmed but as we have developed and grown as we have it has been such a blessing to see how much we have developed as a group and growing in God together.

Man, I only listened for a couple minutes and wanted to quit before I even auditioned. I'll stick to Worship at home and at nursing/assisted living facilities. Those people are hungry for Worship and could care less about what it takes. As long as you love the Lord with all your heart, all your soul and all your strength, is all the requirement necessary.

I think this is great for large churches and especially if you are going to be paid. I’m in a small church so while we could not apply this fully there are great tips to use as guide lines especially with where people are at in there faith journey, as spoken about in the clip. We had a situation that could have been avoided if we had ‘interviewed’ potential team members. We let a couple do sound and AV who we found out after they joined the team were living together, unmarried. We were too keen to say ‘yes’ to any offer of help.

I'd love for him to talk more in depth about how to reduce your EXISTING team size based on specific criteria: spiritual walk, musical capability, attitude, etc.

A worship leader, musician, whatever you call it, is a pastoral leadership position in the church. I have seen too many people playing music in church for the wrong reasons, with the wrong spirit and motivation. Some have talent, some just don't.
Recently attended a church where the "worship team" simply could not sing to canned music through the PA. My wife and I mentioned that we have both served for decades in ministry but after a month of attending, no one showed any interest in what we might have or be willing to offer. We got the impression that they were happy with their church as it was, so we're moving on. Looking for a place where we can use our gifts and love on people in humility.

Simple, have a heart to serve, consistent ( not perfect) walk, can you play or sing

1 What is their commitment to Christ? Does their conduct reflect this & also show a desire for spiritual growth and maturity? 2 Annointing - are they led by the Holy Spirit to serve in this capacity? What's their motivation? 3 Are they humble and teachable? You can Teach a willing person to play at a basic level fairly rapidly. Pick easy songs and parts for them so they can experience the joy of serving. "Greater happiness in giving than receiving ". Plenty of talented people out there who have no business being on a worship team & represeting the congregation in that way. God bless.

My two cents :
Spiritual - Relational - Practical
We can thrive in all 3 !
Team with a calling and pure heart to follow God.
Team that loves and knows each other.
Team that is skillful and organised.
I think too often we can focus on one and neglect the others.
A lot of the time, it's out of balance.
Example:
Focus on 'excellence' practically while neglecting compassion for others.
Or
Their 'heart is in the right place' but the music is so so bad that it's a distraction !
Or
A tight & skilled Team, but their hearts are far from God, wrapped up in ambition.
And so on....
Keep praying, keep playing! May God bless you.

Note: my church is a medium sized church (a few hundred members)
At my church we got a new worship leader about a year ago. His wife came in with him and sings pretty much every week. We already had a weekly bass player (me - I'm retired and have been in 18 bands of all genres since I started in 1998), a backup bass player, drummer, two keyboard players and two backup female singers. I'm also in a couple of "secular" bands and to lead and backup vocals, but not at church, though I've casually offered. BTW, his wife has zero ear for harmony, though she often is assigned harmony.
Then a few months ago he started assigning another guy to play bass every other week The guy does not attend our church but it turns out he does play at some other church. Oh, and he's also the leader's brother.
So I mention to him that on weeks I'm not playing I could sing harmonies and it might be nice to have two male voices. The reason I mention that: A few weeks ago this young girl shows up playing keys. She is not part of the keyboard player rotation. Also, I didn't notice until after the service that she had a mic in front of her. She was apparently singing backup.
Oh, and she's the leader's daughter.
I have no animosity for these folks, and I'm old enough to not be miffed by this. I have all the opportunities to sing and play that I want, but I just find it interesting. I post this as a "make of it what you will".
I'll add one more thing: I'm finding I'm becoming more and more uncomfortable doing Elevation, Bethel and Hillsongs songs. Frankly, some of them are great, but I don't like supporting those organizations and, frankly, a lot of them are "performance" rather than worship songs. So maybe I'm on my way out and they sensed it. But I dunno what's going on with keyboards.

One of the answers i heard in a vineyard worship conferance by a leader was "does God come when you play" because this is the bottom line..its for Him.And i experianced it.Andy Park ..as soon as he played the first chord Gods Spirit fell on us.. we were lead into intimacy with Jesus.
@Valdal98
I’m leading a praise team and there is a nice core of four of us. I am the only one who can hear and sing the harmonies. Our lead singers is extremely good. His wife is good but she cannot hear harmonies she can learn them, but she can’t hear them. We had another person join us for one week and she just took over the entire practice with all kinds of trivial paperwork rather than dedicating time to getting to the songs we needed to do so she will no longer be with us because of that she just wasted time that was precious for our practice. We only have two hours a week and she sucked up at least an hour on paperwork.
