I made this video for teachers. If you're not a teacher, you can still watch, too.
1. Accept the fact that your students are using AI to cheat.
2. Learn to adapt

What do you think? Do you disagree with me? What can we do to stop students from using AI to cheat?
Also, the portion of this video I was specifically referring to is 3:41-5:36

If I cheat it’s not with AI. Professionals need STANDARDS.

Back in my day, we didn’t have fancy ai. We had to risk our lives by peaking at other students papers and whispering to the person next to us

I think it’s important to note that not only are lazy and uncooperative students using AI, but smart students who want to learn are using it too. Not necessarily as a way out, but to KEEP UP WITH THE LAZY ones. Many good students have said it’s frustrating to spend so much time on a task and still do worse than someone who didn’t put any effort into their work. It’s a kind of arms race to the bottom and no one ends up learning anything and the teachers probably think they’re doing a great job at what they do in the process

It’s weird being a teacher and told to keep a look out for students using AI to cheat while simultaneously being told to use AI to lighten my workload.

i'm a student in uni and i feel intimidated by the fact that most of my peers are using ai to do their assignments and i'm not

I am actually pretty happy with myself that I recognized the advice portion was AI. AI really likes to structure things in lists

I know someone who used chat gpt to help pass their law degree. Imagine hiring a lawyer who isn’t 100% sure what they’re talking about!

I remember when I was a kid, AI was presented as something that would save us from menial tasks or hard labor like cleaning the trash or uranium mining. "In the future we would have so much more time for having fun, science, and so on!" little me thought to myself.

Who could have seen coming that first things which will be thrown under the bus are research, education and arts? I didn't

AI cheating is also just as bad for honest students as well! Prior to graduating college, I had to write a large white paper for a class (the whole class essentially revolved around writing this paper). While I used AI to help me find sources for research topics, I created/typed the entire paper by hand. At the end, the so-called "AI detection software" that had to be used because another group cheated, found my writing to be mostly AI when it wasn't. Took me a week of talking with the ethics office to ensure I didn't fail the class. I think these "AI detection" tools are a band-aid to what the actual problem is

I promise you I have never used AI to cheat on my assignments. Please understand that I would never do such a thing.

When I was in high school these LLMs didn’t exist yet, but every week in my AP World history class we would write practice essays, no devices or looking up anything allowed. I’m not a great writer today but I do feel that experience has improved my writing ability from nonexistent to passable.

These kids that are cheating are only screwing themselves in the long run.

I can’t imagine being a teacher nowadays. When I was in high school 15-19 cheating was already an issue, but now you don’t even have to ask the smart kids

I always hated when my professors acted like they could always detect when AI is being used. The reality is that they only feel like they can because the detection tools are fine enough at detecting when something is purely written by AI. But any amount of modification or cleaning up by students thwarts then.

Teachers and professors are falling into confirmation bias because every time they do catch someone using AI it makes them think their tools are great, but they never see all the times that their tool doesn't catch someone using AI.

Love your videos. Always super insightful.

An interesting assignment I had recently was in an American History class where the assignment asked us to have chat gpt generate an essay on a specific topic, then have the students grade the essay and explain each of their grades that they gave in detail for each point on the rubric and correcting what was off.

I'm still a little haunted by the story from a few years ago where the professor asked chat GPT itself if it had written essays and just took its word for it, failed all the students who it said used it to complete their assignments. It can't actually know that.

As someone who never cheated using AI in classes, it's really disheartening to see it become so prevalent. I wonder if exams will be prioritized over essays again, professors seem to swing between the two often
