Live Survivor Panel: Seen, Heard, Supported - Discussing Abuse Disclosure, Church Accountability, and the Path to Healing
Join us for this incredibly powerful and honest live panel event, part of our "Seen, Heard, Supported" campaign. Four courageous survivors of abuse in faith communities—Wendy, David, Debbie, and Ray—share their lived experiences and offer crucial insights on what genuine support and institutional accountability truly look like.
This vital conversation is for church leaders, lay members, and anyone seeking to become a better ally and advocate for trauma survivors.
What We Explored in This Panel:
The Challenge of Disclosure: What are the greatest fears and barriers survivors face when initially disclosing abuse within a church setting? What do they hope for in that moment?
Institutional Responses & Accountability: Panelists share good responses vs. harmful responses from church leaders. We dive into the question of what institutional action can offer true accountability for institutional betrayal and abuse.
Feeling Seen, Heard, Supported: The core of the conversation. Panelists share the specific personal and relational actions that provided genuine support and fostered healing from trauma.
Call to Action: How Churches Can Do Better: A direct and actionable message from the survivors to church leaders on moving from awareness to true support and systemic change.

Is your group familiar with or working with International Cultic Studies Association? I have found great help in the anti-Cult/anti-cultic relationships in our own family tragedy with an abusive man in the church. One of ICSA’s board members, Ken Garret, was interviewed of Jennifer French’s podcast (Project Hope, season 1 Episide 25). Very pertinent to your discussion. I have found the cult exit community much more helpful than the domestic abuse agencies in my area. I think if the two efforts combined, much would improve. Abusive relationships and cover ups of abuse are very very similar to Cultic behavior, so we could learn a lot combining our efforts.
