The Second Book of Enoch: His Journey Through the Ten Heavens (Full Story)

When God took Enoch from the earth, where did he go? The Second Book of Enoch, also known as the Book of the Secrets of Enoch, answers that question in extraordinary detail. It survived for centuries only in Old Church Slavonic manuscripts on the eastern edge of Christian Europe, and was unknown to Western scholars until the end of the nineteenth century. This is the complete story, from the night Enoch was taken to the birth of Melchizedek.

Follow Enoch through all ten heavens: the storehouses of snow and dew, the prison where rebel angels weep in the dark, paradise with its four rivers and the tree of life, and the terrible place that lies just to the north of it in the same heaven. See the chariot of the sun, drawn by phoenixes and the strange chalkydri, the silent Grigori of the fifth heaven, the archangels who write down every human life, and finally the face of God in the tenth heaven, Aravoth.

Then hear what Enoch was told there: secrets that, according to the book, God never shared even with his angels. How the world was made from two mysterious beings, Adoil and Arukhas. How Satanail fell. How Adam was formed from seven substances. Why an angel had to freeze Enoch's face before he could return home, what he taught his sons in his last thirty days on earth, and how the story ends with a child born from a mother who had already died.

This is a narrated retelling of 2 Enoch based on the long and short Slavonic recensions. It also covers the book's history and the open questions about who wrote it and when: the Slavonic manuscripts, the Coptic fragments found at Qasr Ibrim in Nubia, and the Hebrew names of its highest heavens. Where the manuscripts disagree, the narration says so.
