What does it mean to be "born again"? Jesus told the most religious man in all of Israel — a Pharisee, a member of the Sanhedrin, a man of wealth, power, and Scripture — that he still wasn't good enough to enter the kingdom of God. In this episode, we unpack John 3:1–8 and the conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus to answer the question that heaven and hell hang on.

If being religious, knowing the Bible, and obeying God's Word can't get you into heaven — what can? We explore what being "born again" (or born from above) actually means, why regeneration is a miracle of God and not a decision you make, and why this is the dividing line between those who enter glory and those who don't.

📖 Scripture: John 3:1–8, Ephesians 2, Isaiah 64:6, Matthew 15:8

John 6:45 NIV — It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me.

I respectfully disagree when it comes to voice messages. They are awesome! I'd rather receive those over a phone calls! I can't pick up the phone due to being in the middle of something. But I can always check a voice message when it is convenient for me! So no, please reconsider your claims 😂😂😂

Thanks so much, guys, for sharing such a great topic with us. I am so thankful that I saw a short video with Jonny Ardavanis through 'The Gospel Coalition' one day. I don’t remember exactly what it was about, but I’ve been watching this podcast since then. It has been such a blessing to me. @dialinministries

Thanks for this ministry - it’s really been a blessing and has helped strengthen my walk with the Lord.

I have a quick question. Based on verses like Hebrews 10:26–27, I’ve always understood that it’s possible to lose our salvation.

Would you mind elaborating on your statement that we cannot lose our salvation? I’d really appreciate it if you could also explain how verses like this fit with that view.

Jonny can you do a series on the Church and the importance of ecclesiology in the believers life?

Big fan of the channel and your work.

QUESTION- why are you and your church not confessional?

Something I learned recently that gives even more insight into Nicodemus’ question of re-entering his mother’s womb to be born again is highlighted by his specification of being “old.” A Jewish man could be “born again,” so not a term he was unfamiliar with, up to 6 times: when he was bar mitzvah’d, when he was married, when he became a rabbi, when he became the leader of the local synagogue, by converting to Judaism, and upon being crowned a Davidic king. Two of these didn’t apply to Nicodemus so therefore he had accomplished all that he could have of the six, leading him to wonder “what more must I do?” Obviously this speaks to your point about the gospel being not of works!

Looking forward to more. I respectfully would like to question the assertion that even faith is a gift on the grounds of Ephesians 2:8? As I understand, all words in Greek have genders. Both pistis and chariti are feminine nouns while the pronoun doesn’t grammatically agree with either?

Exactly Pastor! Not all belief is saving belief....John 8:30-39...."Free Grace Theology" false in this camp. There was a former member in my small group who stated "All you have to do is believe, you don't have to follow Christ." I pointed him to Matthew 11:28-30 where Jesus issues 3 imperatives...one of the "Learn from me" ( Gk "Mathetes") this is a commandment for discipleship. My question became, if you don't want Jesus, with what righteousness do you believe you will enter the kingdom (Matthew 5:20, 10:38)? To not be worthy ( Gk "Axios") would mean you also don't receive His righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:21). Thank you for this teaching!

Question: how do I love a friend who sinned grievously, let go of my disappointment, and stop myself from expecting more repentance from them? Am I approving their sin if I accept them/their friendship?

I need to understand this, I was born again in the 90’s, but due to personal tragedies, I lapsed in my faith. Are you saying I never lost my salvation because none of this is of our own making? That even believing is from God, and so we do nothing?

God gives his people new life
    In a spiritual way
Normal birth is of the flesh
    That's why Jesus birth was
    A supernatural event
    The immaculate conception
    Born of a virgin
