There should be a special place in hell for HP's team who came up with the subscription model for printers.

Just a reminder, setting up a free account with your public library gives you access to all sorts of online and in-person services. My local library even lets you check out baking appliances for free!

These companies no longer view us as customers, but as RESOURCES they can DRAIN. Part of the greatest wealth transfer in history.

A Practical Reminder: Whenever you pay off your credit card bill, ALWAYS spend a minute to go through the charges. It's the one centralized location for you to catch unwanted subscription charges.

Absolutely perfect to watch this and end on an HBO MAX screen with print underneath saying “plans starting at $10.99 a month” hilarious

When I unsubscribed to Sirius XM, when I finally did the mandatory talk with a manager before I could cancel, I told them cancelling their service felt like a hostage negotiation.

Oh goody, a reminder of the depressing reality I live in delivered to me via a British accent. The perfect thing to watch before I go to sleep.

This is an excellent example of why we can't depend on private businesses to look out for the benefit of the public. They're interested in their own profits and benefits first and foremost. Many regulations serve this kind of purpose, which is to serve the public welfare, whereas private businesses won't because it doesn't benefit them.

Requiring your device to be constantly online only so that it can be remotely killed is diabolical and should be illegal.

In Germany, the “Click to Cancel” / cancellation button requirement was introduced on July 1, 2022. Since then, online businesses offering long-term contracts must provide an easy, clearly accessible way to cancel online.

I cannot explain to you all the absolute meltdown I had when Mom got an overage charge for printing on the device she owns with the ink she bought. Long story short that machine is no longer in the house. Went full Office Space on it.

The HP ink hostage situation is just diabolical.

I think this is one of the things that will help used cars maintain their value; On older cars heated seats didn't require a monthly fee.

Big brother was never the government, it was corporate America keeping track of you.

The ONE singular time I have EVER cursed out an employee was cancelling Planet Fitness. At the time they had a rule that even if you had a black card membership (allowing you to go to any gym) you specifically had to cancel in-person at the specific location you signed up at. Issue was, my original location was destroyed in a flood. So I went to the next-closest gym and told them the situation and the manager begins to say, "Well, technically, it wouldn't" and I simply said, "Don't even fucking try." He didn't say a word and thirty seconds later said, "you're good to go." I felt like a cringey edgelord, but damn, if it didn't work.

As someone who is lower than dirt poor, I fundamentally cannot understand how anybody could FORGET that they're paying for something. The only time I pay for something I forgot about, I see that my bank account is negative and notice I forgot to cancel a free trial.

The whole point of subscription service is them being hard to cancel and people forgetting they are paying for them. Companies make billions a year of those two things alone.

These days, it's best to proceed as if everything is a scam. Most of the time, it is.

I had a gym try to sue me a little over a decade ago because I had changed my credit card after cancelling the membership, and they were denying I canceled, and claimed that I owed them a couple years worth of monthly payments. All of which were during the time after I canceled, and didn't go to the gym.

I represented myself, and won the lawsuit, but that just meant I didn't have to pay anything, I still had to waste my time in court, and got no compensation for them wasting my time.
