Recently right-wing weirdos like Elon Musk and thought-leaders in the evangelical community have both been attacking empathy, pointing out it's potential risks, and criticizing the way that progressives and leftists have "abused" it. So do they have a point? OF COURSE NOT. But in this one I talk about the attack on empathy and share some thoughts from philosophy that can help us see the political and social importance of being empathetic.

"Empathy is a bug which makes you weak", says someone using their child as living shield in public to avoid getting shot.

A sign of how dystopic our reality is when we need to start explain empathy to others.

So a psychopath is telling me I shouldn’t have empathy?

Yeah, no I don’t think I’m gonna take that advice

If I was writing a story, and I gave the villain the line 'Empathy is a weakness', they would get criticized for being too cliche and one dimensional.

People need to stop associating accumulation of wealth with intelligence and common sense.

When the richest man in the world announces that empathy is dangerous, it doesn't make me fear empathy. It makes me fear wealth

"Empathy is a weakness" is such a generic villain line

I looked at the reviews on the "Toxic Empathy" book you mentioned and one of the reviews from a Christian said "This author sides with Rome over Christ." And even as someone who isn't Christian, that's probably the most condemning statement I've ever heard from one Christian about another. I'm gonna add that to my vocabulary.

The range of normal human emotion must be scary to a psychopath with a very limited emotional range

Lack of empathy is what makes someone a sociopath or psychopath. They want to normalize this, so they can commit unspeakable acts.

Any person that views empathy as a weakness is an enemy to all people.

Lack of empathy is a primary indicator of psychopathy and sociopathy. So much makes sense now.

Saying empathy makes you weak is something a Saturday morning cartoon villain would say.

What I have always thought is being a man is to be strong and kind
Showing kindness, empathy and helping is what a man and just a human is

They claim to hate empathy, and yet they will always put on the "Pitty me" act when it is useful to them

I gotta say, 'I actually think empathy is bad' is kind of the admission I was hoping they'd make all along rather than dancing around it.

“In my work with the defendants (at the Nuremberg Trails 1945-1949) I was searching for the nature of evil and I now think I have come close to defining it. A lack of empathy. It’s the one characteristic that connects all the defendants, a genuine incapacity to feel with their fellow men. Evil, I think, is the absence of empathy.”
