We get Baptized for the dead because 1 Peter 4:6 where it says that the gospel is taught to the dead. The gospel is about repentance and forgiveness and the way to accept it is through baptism. Also in 1 Peter 3:19 Jesus preached the dead.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints did not extrapolate the doctrine of ordinances by proxy from that verse. The doctrine was given by revelation through the prophet Joseph Smith, Jr.
A common misrepresentation of the teachings of Christ’s Church, but a misinterpretation regardless.
