I was very sick with a life-threatening illness, and it was the longest December the first time I heard this song. I was just a kid. It was around 3 a.m. I was wide awake and completely alone. My room was dark, cold, sterile. I could see the snow falling outside under the light of the orange streetlights. I began to cry. This song is burned into my memory, just like the smell of the hospital and the feeling that I might never recover. This song helped me decide that I would try my hardest to recover and live because I wanted to see the ocean again. I love this song. Songs are the soundtracks to our individual lives.

He wrote this after a night shift while a friend was in hospital. That little bit of hope in the chorus suddenly feels hard-won.

"The way that light attaches to a girl" is such a show stopping line. That it's in a stellar stanza makes it even better.

This song has been with me ever since I first heard it one afternoon, watching the snow fall outside my window in Boston. Thirty years later, I listen to it from Argentina, and it moves me as much as it did the first time.

I remember being in a Counting Crows chatroom, maybe on their official site(?) back in October 1996 and I remember this girl saying she had A Long December on repeat. I don't have many other memories of the experience, but I remember that.

My daughter and I have seen them live three times..the last was at the stone poney.. the first time ..this was one of the songs we cried to.. my wife has some severe mental illness problems.. over the years this song gave me hope that she would recover after some of the treatments.. " the smell of hospitals in winter" the kids were young and they waited with me three times a week in the waiting room as she had ETC treatments..
Now it just reminds me of what a false hope that was... but I remember how strong my kids were through some hard years.. its still a great song from a great band and a great lyricist ..

I was 16 when I first listened to CC, there was a girl of course, older than I, myself "in love" and she introduced me to them. Mr.Jones was my favorite, but soon after CD purchase I realized it I could play it start to finish and have rollercoaster emotions, and that was rare for albums in the 90's. I bought this CD at least 10 times, people borrowed it, lost it, scratched it etc. I still own it even though I don't use a CD player. I'm an electronics engineer and this is my test CD for CD players I work on. I still put on CC playlist when I do a roadtrip and let those emotions return...it isn't just me..my wife, mom and my daughter love it too...timeless. I will have it played at my funeral.

Love this. Vibes of the old VH1 Behind the Music or even Pop-Up Video......minus the annoying bloop sound effects. More please!

But yeah man, 1996 was a late-GenX college point. This song hits me on some long solo car rides for sure.

Love this album. Some people have the sophomore slump but those first four albums are ridiculous. Hard to explain to kids these days what a good album is, but just point them to these four and they still hold up. Love the later ones too but they're different.

we'd sure love to hear those other takes ... please, guys ..

"I think it's a perfect timeless piece of work." - truer words never spoken! Love this footnotes version, would love to see one about my other all-time CC favorite, 'Mrs. Potter's Lullaby'...
