March 1967. A two-lane county road in north Mississippi, a few miles from the ranch Elvis Presley had just bought. Every car on that road was driving straight past a little roadside stand under a pecan tree, where a 71-year-old man had been sitting since sunrise without selling a thing.

Elvis pulled his pickup truck onto the shoulder, told his cousin Billy to wait, and stood in the grass watching the stand for four minutes. He saw a fallen sign, a box of beautiful handmade brooms nobody could see from the road, and a chair turned the wrong way.

Then he walked over and found out why. The broom maker was blind.

What followed was half an hour with a hammer, a gospel song on a transistor radio, an offer the old man turned down, and five words at the end of the afternoon that left Billy Smith staring at the dashboard.

Silas Odem was a talented man who was blessed to be sitting where Elvis and his cousin happened to stop, and to witness that he might need help.
Elvis had planned to buy Silas’ brooms rather than lend him his eyes, and explain the problems that made him an outstanding daily living. He learned not only why he hadn’t been selling any brooms, but also was taught how to set up the stand each day, where to put the different sizes of brooms, the prices, and his chair, which kept people coming and buying his brooms.
It not only made him a great teacher, but he also made a wonderful friend of Elvis who made him feel like Silas didn't want to use him just for his money, but for his intelligence and kindness.

My Moma was my best friend & she passed in 1989 & I have missed her every time I see her face in a picture frame!

My Daughter favors her & it brings a smile to my face when she laughs but it still brings a bit of sadness!
