Have you ever wondered why John Mayer's playing sounds so good? In this video, I break down the lessons I've learned from studying his songs and explain how they can improve your own guitar playing, songwriting and musicianship.
From the groove of Why Georgia to the emotion of In Your Atmosphere, the restraint of Gravity, and the hypnotic guitar work in Edge of Desire, I'll show you the "Mayerisms" that transformed my playing and how you can apply them to your own style. The best part? Most of these ideas aren't technically difficult. They're simple musical concepts that can make ordinary chords sound extraordinary.

There’s a great video of Mayer hitting a wrong note, realizes it instantly and fixes it with a quick resolution that you’d never know wasn’t intentional if it weren’t for the brief facial expression when he hit the sour note

Thanks for sharing how to play feeling good where the right hand drives the grove of the song like a drummer playing different drum beat patterns. This is how a guitarist should be playing chords / triads / arpeggio /etc... across the entire guitar fretboard.

“Simplicity isn’t the absence of skill, it’s usually the result of it.” This is one of the most important lessons you can ever learn as a musician!

1:25 It's even deeper than that. As a lead guitarist, phrasing is obviously top of my mind. What I learned overtime was that when it comes to the "call and response" aspect, the note choices are less important than the rhythmic choices. The note choices are important for their flavoring of the chord proggression, but the phrasing is nearly 100 percent rhythmic. I like to use they solo in November Rain that most guitarists and listeners would consider pretty epic. If you strip away the notes and just imagine or play it on a snare drum what I'm saying will become very obvious. Edit- the vibrato element is of course extremely important in lead playing but I don't consider it an inherent part of phrasing, though it can and should be used in the phrasing, especially when you're ending a phase with the same note, or overall cluster that was played before it.
Edit - in a nutshell, what we lead guitarist refer to as phrasing is really nothing but rhythm and groove. It's not some convoluted concept that requires decades of mastering. Using the awesome quote loved on this video; it's who you are. Man, I love that!

So many people say lyrics don’t matter
But
I saw my friend , he’s in my head , and he said ….
You don’t remember me do you.
Gives me chills man

I totally agree when you say John’s greatest gift is the ability to craft those melodies. Oddly enough, I didn’t realize how many nuances they are based on until I decided to memorize “waiting on the world to change”: the way he bends and embellish those notes and the way he floats over the groove makes the melody almost impossible to transcribe

To anyone new to this channel or somewhere on their own musical journey - I've been in gigging bands for 35+ years and Tod is a master at stripping away the noise that many YouTuber's create - You can take what he so succinctly identifies to the bank. For me watching these video's is like therapy. His advice is practical, useful and most of all inspiring. I've been putting off learning Mayer's Free Falling but after this master class I am going to do the work. thanks.

Another great lesson!

Great vid!!! Agree with all! And, I also enjoy playing in your atmosphere, but hate having to change tunings for that one song…so it def gets played a little less. But, actually a pretty easy song for many to learn if they give it ago. The tuning sets you up for success
@lamper2
This should've been in the what audiences hate video

Oh yeah, excellent rhythm elements breakdown, too.
