Most people don’t think much about their car’s radiator or coolant… until the engine overheats or the head gasket blows, and they’re stuck with thousands in repairs! In this video, I cover the biggest radiator/cooling system mistakes I see all the time and how to avoid them before they wreck your car.

I’m not a car expert, which is exactly why I watch videos like this—to learn. Most car videos feel like marketing or biased opinions, but the best part about this one? I actually learned a lot.

Allows squeeze top hose to see if it's pressurized

I am a big fan of liquid glass for head gasket leaks. I have seen it first hand after many weeks of chasing solutions without replacing gaskets / heads / blocks. It was amazing.

Years ago my sister and I shared a really beater of car and one day she brought it home and it was overheating. My dad and uncle, having spent their Saturday enjoying beers on the deck, decided to take a look at it and went to turn the radiator cap. Apparently "back in the day" you could do a half twist on the radiator cap and it would release the pressure but not open the radiator up. I am not sure that is true or not but needless to say when they did this on our beater of a car, the cap flew off with a spray of green hot coolant. Both my father and uncle got a nice trip to the ER and some nasty burn scars on their arms and face. So never turn that cap unless its cool.

I remember that viral video on youtube of that guy who never changed his coolant on his Toyota Tacoma pickup and the coolant became so corrosive that it ate right through the cylinder walls of the engine and through the head gasket. He had to buy a new engine block. He was pretty sad. Also you are not supposed to use Dexcool antifreeze. It eats through the intake manifold gaskets and rubber seals on engines. Sadly our family had to have the intake manifold gaskets replaced on our Chevy and it was very expensive.

I only use OEM antifreeze and transmission filters/fluid.

I buy old GM OBS trucks. First thing I do is replace the hoses, water pump, thermostat, radiator, cap, and 50/50 coolant with distilled water. You do not want to kill your transmission or crack the vortec heads.

Thank you for your help. Changed cab and engine filter. Topped off all fluids. Changed backup/blinker and brake light bulbs on both sides. 🎉😅

Great video as always. Thanks so much. I am a total novice but just did a lot of research and changed my coolant on my RAV4. Three other things I would add to this video are: 1. There is three types of coolant: 50/50 (prediluted and ready to use) and concentrate (which needs to water). Concentrate is cheaper and one can buy a gallon of distilled water from the grocery story and mix the concentrate to make 50/50. 2. There are inexpensive plastic burbing funnels to help make sure as much coolant as possible gets in there. Just need to do as this video says and start the engine, let it run, and then turn it off. 3. Best way to confirm put the right amount of coolant in is to compare how much came out and how much was put in.

I'm guilty of ignoring the cooling system for the most part, but I do try to check it every few months. And I finally changed the fluid after 110k miles.

Leave radiator cleaner flush in for a few days. To deep clean. Then flush
